Church and Parish
![[St Luke's seen from the south]](pics/Lukcpic.jpg) |
St Luke's, Chelsea was consecrated
in 1824, one of the first neo-Gothic churches to be built in
England. It was built because the original parish church, now
known as Chelsea Old Church, was regarded as too small for the
increasing population. Its architect was James Savage, one of the
foremost contemporary authorities on mediaeval architecture. The
tower, at 43m (142ft) high, is one of the great landmarks of
Chelsea. The nave, 60 ft. in height, is the tallest of any parish
church in London. |

As well as being full of historical detail and architectural
interest, St Luke's is very much a living and working church,
serving the local community and acting as a spiritual focus for
the parish. Its ethos is broadly traditional; it is loyal to
Anglicanism, without being narrowly conservative. Both old and new
forms of service are used. While the ceremonial is quite plain,
the preaching and teaching are liberal catholic--in other words,
placing a high importance on the sacraments, with the Eucharist as
the main act of worship. The style is inclusive and permissive.
The congregation is eclectic, and includes many expatriates. As
well as regular services on Sundays and weekdays, St Luke's is
also host to many concerts throughout the year.
